Kicking off the new E • Y Series on electrocaïne, Berlin based Oblique’s first release Argandiwal (ارغنده وال) is an ethos to the artist’s Persian heritage – using sampled sounds of iconic Persian and middle eastern drums such as the “zarb”, “daff”, “riqq” and “cajon” in both original tracks, with the name “Argandiwal” referring to the artist’s Persian heritage.
The EP’s title track,“Argandiwal” is a slowly building percussion-heavy piece with several layers of textures building into an intense release of energy, which represents Oblique’s development of an immersive vibe with a strong contrast between analogue synths, sampled percussion and synthesised vocals.
Emshab (امشب – ‘tonight’)- is a more dance floor-friendly piece from Oblique that uses the spoken words of a poem from Partaw Naderi, a contemporary poet from Afghanistan. Emshab speaks about how a new awakening releases the soul from previous hardships, looking into a flourishing and positive future, which are mirrored in a bass-heavy, groovy composition.
OBLQ – the techno alias of the artist is also introduced in this release, with a dubby take on the title track. The original’s percussion is broken down and its vocals chopped up into an energetic DJ-friendly dub version.
The last track on the release is a remix of the EP’s title track by Berlin based, Yaoundé – born artist h1. Having spent his childhood in Kamerun, h1 has a strong connection to Africa that can be easily heard on his tribal rework of Argandiwal, a Persian-African percussive fusion of polyrhythms. h1 started making music in the late 90s, recording loops from his father’s computer onto cassette tape. Nowadays he’s busy noodling around with algorithmic compositions, modular synthesis and building his own gear.
