From the illustrious Ninja Tune stable comes this exclusive “deep, jazzy voyage” from none other than Zero dB.
Could you tell us about The Fluid Ounce Studio?

It doesn’t really exist anymore, I moved to Tokyo about 5 years ago and Chris moved to Barcelona, we have our own studios now, I’ve just completed building one in Durham and Chris still has his studio in Barcelona. Technology has helped immensely, we can still work together and send stuff backwards and forwards to each other, we still managed to work together when I was in Tokyo and he was in Barcelona, but got together for 6 months to put finishing touches to the last album we did (‘Bongos, Bleeps and Basslines’).

What is one of the most interesting project Zero dB has been involved in so far?

Probably the Sun Ra remix we did with Gilles Peterson. We were asked to do the remix after the success of the Suba remix we did (‘Samba do Gringo’) and we’re given some original tapes from Sun Ra recordings. We then thought it would be a great idea to ask Gilles if he wanted to get involved in the project knowing how much of a Sun Ra fan he is. He came down to the studio with a case of Sun Ra records he’d collected over the years. We used all sorts of crazy sounds and it ended up being the first track on our Reconstruction compilation we released on Fluid Ounce.

New studio album on Ninja Tunes?

We’ll have to wait and see, I’m still always working on new stuff (eg. The Oki Bass, the first track on the DJ mix) and chris is too, we need to get enough ideas together to say, OK, we’ve got enough stuff to release as an album now, I don’t know when that will be though.

This set was recorded in July 2011 at our residency at the Electric Pickle in Miami. We always use 2 turntables and 2 cdjs when we perform. Lots of vinyl, no computers!

Was there any particular idea in mind when recording it?

We’ve basically been resident DJs at the Pickle for over a year so it really feels like home when we play there. This set was in the middle of the summer so we played a bunch of sweaty, sticky jams and of course tried to go on a journey…

What comes to mind when you think of Singapore?

Islands, rain forests and durians. Oh and we heard its really clean!

What can we look forward to for your set in Singapore?

Lots of ups and downs. A winding road through house, disco, funk and r+b. Plus some previews of our new album!

Will it be 6 hours?

We play as long they let us play

Has this year been off to a good start? What’s happening?

2012 has been great so far. From beach parties at BPM festival in Mexico to friends’ weddings we’ve had some fun, but mostly been chilling at home in Miami. Singapore is where we really kick off our musical year!

We've basically been resident DJs at the Pickle for over a year so it really feels like home when we play there. This set was in the middle of the summer so we played a bunch of sweaty, sticky jams and of course tried to go on a journey...

What's happening?
2012 has been great so far. From beach parties at BPM festival in Mexico to friends' weddings we've had some fun, but mostly been chilling at home in Miami. Singapore is where we really kick off our musical year!

Winning fans over one mix at a time, Germany’s Patrick Zigon does it again with a gleaming deep diving mix chartering untravelled waters to emerge with precious sonic pearls and dimes. We can almost proclaim that going deep is going up. Bravo!

Where when and how was this mix recorded?

I recorded this mix in my “Traumraum” studio in southern germany. I work with Traktor and Timecode-Vinyls. I play records since 1996, so i still need the vinyl-feeling in my hands ;-)

How would you describe the mix?

The mix shows the kind of music i love and play in clubs where people like innovative sound. Deep and hypnotic tracks from different genres such as deep house and dub techno.

An introspective mix from the island of Réunion. Smooth operator Vincent Corvec flows from classic hip hop to disco and funk in laid-back fashion, where the fish are jumping and the living easy. Slow it down, slide in ”The Syllogisme of Foreplay”.

When and where was this mix recorded and what equipment?

On September the 3rd, in my apartment in Réunion Island. I kept the mix with me for 3 months to distress it and make it taste like oak-aged wine. I have recorded simply using a laptop and a midi-controller. I’m not a technician but I rather do a good mix with midi than a bad one with turntables. I try to find the best wav re-edits of every track, to be faithful to the whole emotion of the original.

Can you tell us about the mix itself?

It’s a slow one. We begin around 90 bpm and stop under 110. It’s a mingling of old classics and brand new songs so I decided to create a meeting place for them.
Meet Matthias “Matty” Heilbronn, the man who delivers us a unique journey thru a 2 hours exclusive mix. Based in New York since 1989, Matty was mentored by Francois K. and had Frankie Knuckles as his roommate. He had the privilege to meet and work with Larry Levan and Tom Moulton and became one of New York’s most recommended music editor and programmer. Also, he has worked with producers Danny Tanaglia, Todd Terry, Tommy Musto, C&C Music Factory and Francois K.

We interrogate him a little:

What’s the idea behind the mix?

I like to change the mood whenever I play in a club by playing different genres and this is what I wanted to do on this mix. It’s a bit of story that starts off strong and dark then goes into a deeper and more melodic tech. A bit of old school and some deep and dubby vocals back up into deep techno. I hate to be restrained to one vibe, and I think this mix shows it.

Of all the people you have yet to work with, who do you want to work with the most?

I’ve always answered this question with Chaka Khan and recently did a remix of her song, “Disrespectful” feat. Mary J. Blige. Well, I’m fortunate to work with a lot of my heroes – Alicia Keys, Beyonce, Roy Ayers, Maxwell, Earth Wind & Fire, Bootsy Collins just to name a few. But ever since I became a producer, I’d have to say Quincey Jones! I don’t think there’s anybody I’ve respect more. Also, I wouldn’t mind burning some trees with D’Angelo and locking myself into the studio for a week to see what we can come up with. I love his voice and the way he plays his keys is absolutely fantastic. They’re two complete opposites – Quincey’s productions are totally thought out. Every little riff compliments the next, each instrument plays a melody that in today’s music would be enough to create a new song. As for D’Angelo’s musi, it is totally understated. I love his minimalistic approach. It’s all about the mood and I like that.

What’s the last record u bought?

Jill Scotts last album…a little disappointing

First two records you ever tried to mix?

lol..like I can remember. I was always more interested in programming the right songs, rather than doing the perfect mix, but I always liked a challenge, so it could have been Kraftwerk – Tour De France or Numbers into Sisters Of Mercy – Alice

Who or what is inspiring you at the moment?

My son..he just turned 8 and he is amazing! Musically, I am diggin’ Layo and Bushwacka!’s stuff of late and am always excited when Henrik Schwartz puts out something new.

What happens when all the partying is over?

Meet Matthias “Matty” Heilbronn, the man who delivers us a unique journey thru a 2 hours exclusive mix. Based in New York since 1989, Matty was mentored by Francois K. and had Frankie Knuckles as his roommate. He had the privilege to meet and work with Larry Levan and Tom Moulton and became one of New York’s most recommended music editor and programmer. Also, he has worked with producers Danny Tanaglia, Todd Terry, Tommy Musto, C&C Music Factory and Francois K.

We interrogate him a little:
What's the idea behind the mix?
I like to change the mood whenever I play in a club by playing different genres and this is what I wanted to do on this mix. It's a bit of story that starts off strong and dark then goes into a deeper and more melodic tech. A bit of old school and some deep and dubby vocals back up into deep techno. I hate to be restrained to one vibe, and I think this mix shows it.
Of all the people you have yet to work with, who do you want to work with the most?
I've always answered this question with Chaka Khan and recently did a remix of her song, "Disrespectful" feat. Mary J. Blige. Well, I'm fortunate to work with a lot of my heroes - Alicia Keys, Beyonce, Roy Ayers, Maxwell, Earth Wind & Fire, Bootsy Collins just to name a few. But ever since I became a producer, I'd have to say Quincey Jones! I don't think there's anybody I've respect more. Also, I wouldn't mind burning some trees with D'Angelo and locking myself into the studio for a week to see what we can come up with. I love his voice and the way he plays his keys is absolutely fantastic. They're two complete opposites - Quincey's productions are totally thought out. Every little riff compliments the next, each instrument plays a melody that in today's music would be enough to create a new song. As for D’Angelo’s musi, it is totally understated. I love his minimalistic approach. It’s all about the mood and I like that.
What's the last record u bought?
Jill Scotts last album...a little disappointing
First two records you ever tried to mix?
lol..like I can remember. I was always more interested in programming the right songs, rather than doing the perfect mix, but I always liked a challenge, so it could have been Kraftwerk - Tour De France or Numbers into Sisters Of Mercy - Alice
Who or what is inspiring you at the moment?
My son..he just turned 8 and he is amazing! Musically, I am diggin' Layo and Bushwacka!'s stuff of late and am always excited when Henrik Schwartz puts out something new.
What happens when all the partying is over?
I have had my share of partying and think I am on to the next phase, but I will always be a DJ.
What's next for matthias heilbronn?
I have worked in the studio a lot over the last year, so it’s a matter of putting all this stuff out and finding the right outlet. The productions I have done with Joeski are coming out through both of our labels, a new track with Gerideau is getting a major remix treatment from the likes of Rocco, etc..
What are you up to?

What makes a great gig?

The Jets – Rock it to you. That was yonks back!!!

The architect of Singapore's nightlife and the godfather of Singapore's dance music scene, Godwin P, delivers a winner through a potent mixed bag of tech house, techno and house, intent on keeping the head bobbing and the dance floor moving.

We interrogate him a little here:
What are you up to?
Keeping myself busy with club-based projects locally and internationally.
A lot of djs name you as a major influence. Where do you see dance music is heading?
Really? I'm honoured :) It's been heading into some strange sectors lately but I do believe that it's a cycle and the good stuff usually comes back which it will soon.
What makes a great gig?
People, Sound systems and a great venue.
Out of the tunes you have, which one 'never fails' ?
Flood by Shapeshifter
What's the first record you bought?
The Jets - Rock it to you. That was yonks back!!!
What's the idea behind this mix?
It's basically a texture mix of tech and tech house tunes that I'm digging that are ranging from 125bpm to 128bpm. If you like soundscapes and funky basslines then you'll enjoy it. Listen and you will understand.</itunes:summary>
